What Are Roleplay Points?
Over time, players here at Shadows of Isildur may amass units of confidence
from the staff we call "roleplay points". They are given out by staff members
for various facets of exemplary roleplay, and are used by players in character
generation to create new PCs in various restricted roles and races or cultures.
The points are stored on your account, so they may transfer from one of your
lifetimes into the next; thus, over time you may accumulate more.
As mentioned above, roleplay points are strictly representative of how much
trust the staff places in you as a player. They are not indicative of how
much we like you as a person, they are not indicative of how long you have played
here, nor are they indicative, strictly speaking, of
the overall quality of your roleplay. As outlined below, an absolutely stellar roleplayer prone to
bouts of retiring numerous PCs or not logging in for months at a time will likely
find himself with less roleplay points in the end than a strong roleplayer with a track
record of consistent dedication to the game and her characters' roles.
Finally, to re-iterate, roleplay points are strictly used in character generation,
to allow players designing new PCs access to restricted races and roles. Once you are
finished with your application, they have absolutely no bearing on the game whatsoever -
once out of the gate, they are completely irrelevant to your character's fate.
Do I Need Them?
Absolutely not. In fact, it's a not-uncommon occurrence to hear players with them remark
that they very rarely use them; most people prefer to "build" a character from the
ground up in-game, providing them with a rich history shared with many other PCs. Also,
it is well-known that as you reach the upper echelons of the system, you encounter roles
that are more and more restricted in their social interactions with other players; as the
saying goes, it gets lonely at the top. These roles also tend to come with a great deal of
responsibility that restricts your freedom as a player due to the amount of work involved
in performing the required duties.
Almost anything that can be accomplished by using roleplay points on an application in character
generation can be achieved through hard work in-game - and for the reasons outlined above,
many of our veteran players even prefer to do it that way. There are exceptions,
such as playing a Wise or a restricted race, but they are quite rare.
How Do I Know If I Have Them?
In addition to having additional options available to you in the character generation sequence,
once there are roleplay points attached to your login account you will see an additional line
in the SCORE command, right below your attributes, informing you how many you have.
The ability to see this information is set OFF by default; if you wish the score command
to show you this total, you must first use the SET RPP command. You may enter the command
a second time to once more remove that line from the output.
How Do I Get Them?
As mentioned above, awarding roleplay points is solely the province of the administrative
staff. Before examining the criteria set forth below, however, there are a few things you
need to keep in mind. First and foremost: roleplay points are a privilege, not a right.
Many players have gone for months or even a year or more before acquiring their first point;
those without the patience for such a process would quite likely not prove adequate for many
of the roles these points unlock. So - be patient, and you'll quite likely find yourself rewarded!
As a corollary to this rule, emailing the admin staff to
inquire whether or not you've simply been overlooked for a point award is quite fine.
Contacting us, however, to demand that we give you the points you deserve, or to
tell us why we were wrong in choosing to abstain from awarding you those points, will
certainly not get you anywhere - unless, of course, you're looking to get on our bad side. This
sort of behavior is simply not tolerated; at best you will be ignored, and at worst we
may impose sanctions on you for wasting our time.
That said, the general criteria the staff are bound by in awarding points, as well as
the number of players currently at each point-level, are as follows:
Point 1 (2.17%, or 159 players): Demonstration of a solid grasp of the game, the concept, and the gameworld;
exhibits thoughtful, articulate and polished roleplay interaction. Has clearly learned to
delineate IC from OOC information, and has not committed any serious policy infractions (those
warranting loss of access to the game) within the previous 120 days.
Point 2 (1.46%, or 107 players): Consistent demonstration of the requirements for the first point; no less than
30 days have passed since the date of the previous award.
Point 3 (0.9%, or 66 players): Demonstration of low- to mid-level leadership ability; exhibits the ability to involve
other PCs in roleplay plots, and to log in and play with regularity.
Point 4 (0.7%, or 51 players): Consistent demonstration of the requirements for the third point; no less than
60 days have passed since the date of the previous award.
Point 5 (0.21%, or 15 players): Demonstration of strong leadership and organizational ability, as well as the
ability to create and maintain plots while keeping other PCs interested.
Point 6 (0.18%, or 13 players): Consistent demonstration of the requirements for the fifth point; no less
than 90 days have passed since the date of the previous award.
Point 7+ (0.22%, or 16 players): Awarded for individual instances and scenes of highly exemplary roleplay, in no greater a frequency
than one point per any 120 day-period.
Can I Lose Them?
Yes, primarily in two ways. First: as explained below, submitting an application for
a character of a restricted race will dock a part of the application's point cost from
your account, in order to encourage our players to keep those races rare sights in-game.
Secondly, as these points are a measure of the staff's trust in you, if you do anything
to abuse that trust you may find yourself missing points. Although the most obvious way to accomplish
this is to exhibit poor roleplay on a level unbecoming your point total, there are other ways
as well. For example, things such as consistent flaming or harassment of the staff or other
players over email or on the web forum, using information
gleaned OOCly to your character's benefit, or, in general, violating any of our policies, would all suffice.
Generally, if a staff member needs to go so far as to penalize you in such a way, you will
receive an email detailing what you did to prompt such a response. For a variety of reasons,
this is not always the case, however;
therefore, if you find yourself missing points and are genuinely unsure as to what you may have done to
deserve this, you are certainly welcome to inquire via email, provided you do so in a respectful and civil manner.
What Can I Do With Them?
As mentioned briefly above, roleplay points allow you to unlock certain restricted roles and races during
the character generation process. In the case of roles, you are allowed to step right into the game in
one of various elevated positions, rather than having to work your way into the role in-game as players without
the requisite points must do. In the case of races, only those players with the required amount of
points are permitted to play them in-game.
Unlike other RPIs you may have played, we do not allow special applications. If there is a role listed below that
you wish to play, you must achieve the point requirement to do so; we do not and will not make exceptions
for anyone, regardless of their past history here or their roleplay abilities. That said, however, if there is
a specific role you wish to play that you do not see listed, and if you have enough roleplay points for any comparable
roles that are listed, you should feel free to email the staff and inquire if an application for a character
in the desired role would be feasible in terms of the game's structure. We will almost always try our best to accomodate
reasonable requests of that nature, if you're willing to work with us.
We also differ from other RPIs using a point-based system for access to restricted characters in that,
depending on the circumstance, submitting such an application will dock a certain number of points from
your account. The rule is as follows: races will subtract half of their point requirement from your
account total after a certain 'grace period' of playtime, whereas roles will not. This is done to keep restricted
non-starting races a rare occurrence in the gameworld and preserve thematic continuity. Furthermore, costs do
not stack; so, if you want to play a Dwarvish armorsmith, you will only need to meet the point
requirements for whichever of the two elements is more expensive, and not both combined.
Finally, you should know that not all races and roles available in character generation are listed here. Although
these lists are generated directly from the game's database, some sensitive roles, as well as certain exceedingly rare races, have been flagged 'hidden' by the staff, and thus are only viewable
in character generation to those players with the requisite points.

You will report to a specific Warden and in return receive time patrolling at their side, advice, and training when appropriate. Should Lord Astirian go to war, it will also be your task to protect levied villeins, and to fight alongside them, under the command of your Warden. You will begin with leather armor, equipment, a bed and sustenance at the Anorien Bastion. In time, if your Warden, and Lord Astirian are pleased with your abilities, you will be promoted to the rank of Warden. | Role Title: | Gothakra Newblood |
| Point of Contact: | Zapata |
| Date Posted: | Tue Jul 11 19:32:15 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 1 point |
Whilst your character was but a pup when the tragic events of
Gothakra's gutting took place, now that the clan has barely
survived their role in the Fall of Osgiliath your character has
risen to age to take part in the clan's revival in the new lands
of Tur Edendor. Your character, either a goblin, half-orc, orc or
half-troll, is of very young age and of little experience, but
they are a proper member of the Gothakra warband in Tur Edendor,
and have earned themselves a suit of bone-studded leathers, a
weapon or two, and a Gothakra shield to prove this.
This role is open to both combatants and more peaceful sorts, but
happy-go-lucky socialisers are advised against this role; Tur
Edendor society, and Gothakra clan-life especially, favours the
violent, cunning, and sociopath.

| Role Title: | Villien Farmer for the Cult of Morgoth |
| Point of Contact: | Japheth |
| Date Posted: | Fri Jul 21 06:10:09 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 3 points |
The Cult of Morgoth in Tur Edendor is just as much as political institution as a religious one, and under the terms of their land grant to Krayd, they must produce a certain amount of food every season to tribute to Krayd. Unfortunately in Tur Edendor there is a significant skills shortage - few of the people there have ever been involved in any form of significant agriculture. The Cult is unable to draw this particular skill from its own broader membership, as the Cult's wealth has always been highly mercantile and Tur Edendor is a new experience for them. As such, they have paid a significant amount of money to ship in someone from abroad with the skills to manage an agricultural enterprise. You have arrived in the Cult of Morgoth's duchy outside Tur Edendor and have been given control of a portion of the lands there. You will be a Kadar-Lai, and will have a personal farmhouse (as well as control over a communal one) as well as several fields. The Cult of Morgoth will retain possession of all of these things but you will receive a salary for working their land for them, and you will also be in charge of employing other PCs to fulfill farm labour. You will be but a Kaal in the Cult of Morgoth, but you are not required to even be a believer - you are a hired employee and manager. The races which may choose this role are Black Numenorean, Haradrim, Corsair, Renegade Human, and negotiably, Variags and Dunlendings.

| Role Title: | Yameg Apprentice Shaman in the Twisted Eye of Khagdu |
| Point of Contact: | Japheth |
| Date Posted: | Sat Sep 9 20:44:50 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 3 points |
In a tribe of fanatics, you are one of the few considered fanatic enough to serve the Spirit's will more directly. The Yamegs serve as the spiritual advisors and leaders of the Twisted Eye of Khagdu - you are on the bottom rung of a path that theoretically leads to the Duumul-Buhgrakh itself. You are also apprenticed to a (Current or Future) PC Yameg-Khur shaman, who is teaching you about the Spirit, and how to work its gifts. You will assist the Yameg-Khur in rituals, prepare the more tedious parts, let much of your own blood, and generally provide guidance for the regular members of the warclan. This is not a primary combat role, though you are encouraged to be at least able to defend yourself. You will be given a decent set of leathers, and some shamanistic trinkets, as well as an inherent position in the warclan.

| Role Title: | Black Watch of Tur Edendor |
| Point of Contact: | Zapata |
| Date Posted: | Tue Jul 11 19:34:35 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 4 points |
Characters taking this role must be Black Numenorean. As a Black
Numenorean, your character is one of the many Black Watch
(something all Black Numenoreans experience at some point in their
life), and has either chosen to or been ordered to serve their
term at Tur Edendor. The Black Watch are the sole enforcement
body of the new settlement of Tur Edendor, and thus have almost
unlimited power over their fellow men and orcs. Many consider the
Black Watch to be an entrepreneurial career, the position as an
enforcer of the city a fantastic opportunity for a cunning person
to make friends, allies, power, and money.
Those not interested in politics, or cunning, or scheming, are
advised not to take this role. Likewise, straight-out combatants
are likely to be disappointed; the Black Watch in Tur Edendor are
not a military force, but a police force, and unlikely to see
direct combat unless as observers. Experience with being under
handed, tricky, and subtle are highly recommended; people with
little imagination of treachery are not advised to take this role.
|
| Role Title: | Chief Historian and Scribe of Tur Edendor |
| Point of Contact: | Zapata |
| Date Posted: | Tue Jul 11 19:34:54 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 4 points |
Characters taking this role must be Black Numenorean. Your
character is the head of the scribes and civil service of Tur
Edendor, and has quite a number of duties because of this.
Collecting tallies and rents, making sure taxes are paid and
business licenses fulfilled, enforcing contracts and agreements
made, as well as compiling much information about both Gondor,
Mordor, and people in Krayd's own lands are common duties. Other
tasks will include writing the official city history every in
game year, organising the Krayd's spy network, and keeping the
lesser servants to the Black Watch and Civil Service in line.
People taking this role should be prepared to forgo both combat
and merchant type tasks, instead playing a highly political and
subtle role in the running of the city; merely compiling the
official city history will be an opportunity to experience
bribery, threats, treachery and politics first hand.

well and have established yourself as a respectable person in the
city. Your job entails running the Cityworkers; managing pay for
your workers, ensuring the good workmanship of your Foremen and
workers themselves, maintaining recruitment, and answering to the
needs of the City. You will receive room and board and a generous
pay, so long as you invest your time into the City in return.
If you are interested in this role, you must have an interest in
helping new players. This is a good role for those players who
enjoy good social roleplay and are interested in earning higher
level roleplay points.

their homeland; whether they were famed as a warrior, or famed as

| Role Title: | Arranged Black Numenorean Bride |
| Point of Contact: | Japheth |
| Date Posted: | Thu Jul 20 18:08:25 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 5 points |
Most Black Numenorean females are married to Black Numenorean males in arranged, highly political marriages, and marriage is seen as more of a business relationship than anything romantic. However, with the terrible blow of more than 4,000 breeding age males dying in Morgul Vale, many pragmatically minded family heads have begun to pick and choose only the best females for their sons, as there is an enormous over abundance of available women of marryable age. You are such a woman
young, bred of impeccable stock, intelligence, and with a sizeable dowry to offer. You have been arranged to be married to a young Black Numenorean man in Tur Edendor, which requires you to move from your lavish home estate in Nurn, or Umbar, or wherever it is you originally come from, which you may be unhappy about (or alternately you may be thrilled). You will enter the game betrothed to a PC Numenorean, and will bring with you a significant amount of wealth to get you through until you can be married, and an NPC chaperone. You will inherit the status of your husband in Tur Edendor, but once married your success will be linked - marriage is a union after all.

You are considered to be fully possessed of the Spirit, and you often receive dreams of guidance and prophecy. You are also a shaman of some accomplishment, and with your potent herbs, mixtures, and a little ritual magic, you are able to do great feats in the Spirit's name. While this does not have to be a combat role, you could conceivably be a warrior as well - whether it represents skill and training from before you found your gifts, or whether you're a psychotic flagellant of the Spirit's cause. Essential skills for this role include herbalism, healing and skin (for mixing your potions and balms, and properly butchering your sacrifices). You will also be given the prescience skill, and some ritual magic crafts. It is essential that the applicant be experienced in playing an ork, and former experience with the Twisted Eye of Khagdu is preferable, though not required.

| Role Title: | Young Heir of a Destitute Noble House |
| Point of Contact: | Japheth |
| Date Posted: | Fri Jul 14 02:58:20 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 5 points |
You were born into one of the fine noble houses of the Black Numenorean heritage. As a first born of an influential family member, you were groomed for leadership from a young age. Your cup was never empty and you never wanted for anything. Now, you have come of age, and quite surprisingly, the family has decided to hand over control of their affairs to you - while unexpected, this was a great honour, until you found out the family's horrible secret - they are completely destitute. Having lived off borrowed money for far longer than was probably smart, they are deeply in debt and have exhausted all their favours. Unfortunately, you have now officially inherited that debt onto yourself and your family's creditors are almost literally beating at the door. In your favour, knowledge of your family's disgraceful financial situation is confined to the angry, but professional creditors. Should your family become publicly exposed as in such serious financial trouble, the great houses may decide to strike down a potential future threat, so it is vital that you spend like you can afford anything, and maintain an appearance of wealth. Some of the elders that favoured you and had some desire to help the situation have sold everything they can lose without lacking the obvious necessities for people of your birth station, and have given you the cash in the eleventh hour hope that you can solve the problems of the family. Either gender may take this role, but you must remember that you are of noble birth - sullying your own hands by doing honest work to get out of your financial situation would be scandalous.

| Role Title: | Dispossessed, Bastard Gondorian Noble |
| Point of Contact: | Kite |
| Date Posted: | Thu Jul 20 18:17:37 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 6 points |
You are the member of a lesser-lordly House, whose lands lie in northwest
Lebennin. In a cruel twist of fate, your House has split with the sudden death
of its patriarch, who was undecided on the official declaration of his heir.
The inheritance has passed to his eldest natural son, as is Gondorian custom,
but is fiercely refuted by other members of the House who all wish to make
a claim to the House title and lands. You are one of these members, and wish
to state your own claim for a variety of reasons. As a bastard child, you are
in no position to make any declarations, however. Your primary goal is to
acquire three things - followers, money and prestige - in order to petition
the Lord of Lebennin to inter you as patriarch or matriarch of the House.
Followers may come in the form of NPCs (hired guards and attendants) as well
as PCs who are bound to you. Money will have to be cleverly obtained, as
though you will begin with considerable personal wealth, you will have no
direct form of income. Prestige, though not easily definable, can be
obtained through the possession of properties, titles (perhaps on the City
Council), and the commission of noteworthy deeds. If you succeed in the
momentous task of reclaiming your lands, your work will not be at an end - you
will have to manage your territories, and stave off the other greedy claimants
in your House. This role is for ambitious PCs, comfortable with self-reliant
leadership. Do not expect to succeed through administrator aid. The role itself
may be connected to any and all elements of Gondorian society, be they
militaristic, political or economical. A House history, heraldry and name is
also required, to be drafted by the applicant.

| Role Title: | Khor of Tur Edendor |
| Point of Contact: | Zapata |
| Date Posted: | Tue Jul 18 05:10:33 2006 |
| Point Requirement: | 6 points |
As a Khor of the city, your character has the opportunity to raise
a band of warriors to serve Duke Krayd Nadilith in battle, or
manage the internal economy and sponsor merchants to better supply
his settlement. Your character may be of any race, and has come
from a position of some importance in their home lands, deciding to
uproot from their home for whatever reason to be described in your
background and head for Tur Edendor. After sending a message or
perhaps an underling to meet with Duke Krayd ahead of you, and
spending an amount of your amassed wealth on paying tribute, he
agreed to grant you the privilege of being a Lord of the city.
Your character will begin the game with either a manor house or
troops barracks, a suitably impressive suit of armour or clothing,
a half-dozen troops or armed bodyguards and retainers, proper
livery and markings, as well as many other goods. If you are
interested in this role, you will need to be prepared to develop
a lengthy background story and comprehensive documentation for
your clan, and be able to dedicate time in a leadership position
for Tur Edendor. Scheming, conniving players are recommended for
this position; just because you are a Lord of the city does not
still mean your life is subject to Krayd's whims, and that
continually pleasing him is your character's top priority.

| Role Title: | Blood Ring Psionic Operative, Gondor |
| Point of Contact: | Kite |
| Date Posted: | Sat Mar 5 05:25:54 2005 |
| Point Requirement: | 7 points |
This role will get you in on the ground floor as one of the Blood Ring's
psionic operatives. Your responsibilities are primarily internal defense of
the Kingdom of Gondor: specifically, discovering any rogue psionicists or
magic users within the kingdom's border, and either recruiting them to the
cause or dispatching them. A strong and independent roleplayer is required
here. In many ways, your character will lead a double life; the Ring is one of
the most secretive organizations in all of Gondor, and its members are trained
and indoctrinated almost from birth. You will pass as a respectable if
nondescript member of society, so that you might do your superiors' bidding
and defend your kingdom free of hinderance. The other side of the coin,
however, is a bit harsher: if you should be caught, or otherwise detected, you
will be left to whatever fate awaits you - even if you survive being outed
initially, you'll probably be "paid a visit" quite soon enough. Only extremely
high-aura characters are permitted in this role; we will handle setting up
your psionics once you are approved. This role will include an income for
any necessary purchases, equipment and a place to stay. Your character must
be literate.

| Role Title: | Dunadan Grey-Wise, Gondor |
| Point of Contact: | Kite |
| Date Posted: | Sat Mar 5 05:34:56 2005 |
| Point Requirement: | 10 points |
You are an aged Dunadan - descended from the noblest of the
Firstborn, and perhaps even one of the Ainur, you have been
granted an insight that is uncharacteristic for those of
your kin. As a man, you have a relatively inexperienced grip
of magic, and have much time yet to expand your mind and spirit.
Pledged to strict neutrality in all conflicts save those in
which the other side has access to powers of a sorcerous nature,
your primary role in service to Gondor is one of reconnaissance
and preparation.
You will serve as a member of a secret Order within Gondor - a
group of Men that parallels the recently formed Council of the
Wise. To be ousted publicly as a member of the Order

| Role Title: | Elvish White-Wise, Gondor |
| Point of Contact: | Kite |
| Date Posted: | Sat Oct 2 20:48:26 2004 |
| Point Requirement: | 12 points |
An ancient and respected member of Eru's firstborn, over the
steady march of the centuries you have nurtured a growing
connection with the power of the Valar themselves. You have
arrived in Gondor borne from your homeland by the saddened
awareness of the encroaching war and the gathering darkness;
although loathe to involve yourself directly, and quite aware
of Gondor's fallen bloodline and weak spirit, you are intent
to learn what you are able of the Enemy's forces, and perhaps
do what you can to ease suffering in the war-torn Kingdom.
